How a Mentor at a Local Court Changed Everything for AIKAI Pickleball

My real job is being a Dad.

In 2022, I sat down with my two kids, Kai, 12, and Ai, 15, and gave them an assignment: start a business. Real customers. Real products. Real adversity.

We landed on pickleball. A sport the whole family loved, a market that was exploding, and an opportunity to build something that stood for more than just gear. We named it AIKAI, Ai means Love in five languages, Ka'i means to Lead in Hawaiian. Love to Lead. That was the mission from day one.

But we needed an education first.

Enter Master Chi.

Every court has that one regular who knows more than everyone else. At our local courts in Irvine, that was Master Chi. He was always there, and he always had a new prototype.

He walked us through the full evolution of paddle technology. Gen 0: wood. Gen 1: fiberglass, the first real performance leap. Gen 2: graphite, lighter, more responsive. Gen 3/4: raw carbon fiber, thermoformed construction and Gen 4/5: All foam coretech, the technology that changed everything.

Most players don't know what generation they're holding. Master Chi knew exactly why each one felt different. And he shared that knowledge the way great teachers always do, freely, patiently, with genuine investment in the people across from him.

Then he gave us something even more valuable. Through his deep roots in the paddle world, Master Chi connected AIKAI with one of the most prominent paddle development facilities in the industry. The kind of facility that builds for brands charging $200 and up.

That relationship gave us a choice. Use the access to charge more, or pass the savings to the player.

We chose the player.

Raw carbon fiber face. 16mm thermoformed core. Edge foam protection. USAPA approved. $129. Not because we cut corners, because we cut the middlemen instead.

The brand has grown beyond paddles since then. We're now partnering with Orange County high schools to build pickleball programs ahead of CIF varsity recognition in 2027. Arizona and Maryland already have varsity pickleball. California is next, and we intend to help lead it.

Because Kai and Ai are part of the generation this pathway is being built for. And that's the thing about building something with your kids. You can't phone it in.

Every paddle reflects that. Every school partnership reflects that.
